5 Tips for at Home Self-Care

May 14, 2020

With the stress of recent events, it's more important than ever to make sure we’re taking care of ourselves. Staying active and maintaining productivity are great ways to stay motivated in these uncertain times, but it’s also a good time to check in with ourselves and make sure we’re looking after our mental health. Read ahead for five simple self-care tips you can try at home for better wellness and peace of mind.

Unplug

Living in a digital age, it’s inevitable that we spend a significant amount of time tuned into our screens. Still, taking the time to consciously unplug for a bit can have a significant impact on our wellbeing. Try stepping away from social media or emails, even briefly, for some personal recharging.

Focus on Your Breathing

The simple act of regulating breath control can have profound impacts on managing stress and anxiety. Try rolling out a yoga mat and lying on the floor to connect to your breathing, even for a few minutes. Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth, and remember to keep your shoulders away from your ears-- repeat until you feel more centered. Apps like Calm and Headspace can also help with breathing and meditation.

Nurture a Creative Outlet

We all have hobbies that we never get to devote much energy to. But now we have the opportunity to focus a little more attention on the creative outlets that inspire us. Whether it’s cooking, painting, writing, or learning a new language, spending time on an activity that’s important can feel particularly enriching right now.

Now’s a great time to revisit those books we’ve been meaning to read, but never seemed to have the time for before. Whether it’s classic literature or a contemporary read, allow yourself the time to curl up with a good book and immerse yourself in the story. Consider starting a Zoom book club with friends and family who are reading the same book!

Write a Letter

Though we communicate digitally more than ever now, receiving a handwritten letter in the mail can be an unexpected thrill. Taking the time to craft a note offers a personalized gesture and a letter is a tangible time capsule of the events we’re living through together.

Quarantine asks us to slow down in many ways, but with that comes the opportunity to connect with ourselves and others in a new way. Making time to breathe and re-group is important for managing wellness right now. Let us know the opportunities you’re finding for self-care by tagging your posts on social media with #MonarcMet.
